Wax Wrapping …. Poetic

February 2, 2010

Rapping plastic in PIP's Green Speaker's Corner

Your local Pipsters Karen, Dawn, Giovanni and Aron were all a-flutter on February 1st for School District 47’s all-day Community Caretakers Conference (C3) taking place at Brooks and Henderson Schools in Powell River, BC.

The day’s events  included  an awesome slide show and talk by writer/film-maker/eco-activist/park ranger Karsten Heuer (whose latest film Finding Farley will be showing at the Powell River Film Festival on Friday Feb. 13th at 12:30), followed by a locally-produced waste-free lunch by Nia Wegner. The afternoon workshops ranged from bike repair, to song-writing, creating an eco-slide show,  making a bear-safe composter, a seed-to-table demo, and our own Wax Wrap demo, among others.

Pebble in the Pond also hosted the Green Speakers Corner generously sponsored by Maradadi Pacific where more than 15 fantastic kids of different ages dropped in and waxed poetic about the dangers and solutions to plastic pollution!

Speaking of wax…our Wax Wrap Workshop fronted by the mysterious “Mr.S” (Aron Strumecki) was a fabulous success as he led 20 students through the process of  creating this ingenious product that is meant to replace plastic wrap. Click here to download the workshop handout in Adobe Acrobat  format (1.5 Mb pdf). Give Pebble in the Pond a shout if you have questions about sourcing local pure beeswax needed for this tutorial.
